World Academy for the Future of Women (WAFW) members attend Sias University in Henan Province, China. When it closed down in January of 2020 because of Covid 19. Many of the girls returned to the rural communities where they grew up where they may be the only person in their village that knows English. With the mandated quarantine, many of them were not able to practice their English language skills.

Through WAFW I volunteered to be an english speaking mentor and committed to helping my mentee move forward with her English language skills.

In collaboration with Chatham’s CTO and another woman on the tech team we built a relationship with Girls Inc., to bring middle school girls on to Chatham’s campus to teach HTML/CSS classes.

We sourced volunteers from the tech and product teams. We had one mentor for each mentee which allowed the mentee and mentor to build a rapport, enhancing the learning experience for the girls.

I designed the sessions and created the learning activities for each session. We had members across the tech team volunteer to facilitate the sessions allowing them to build upon their presentation/facilitation skills.

I’ve volunteered locally for the past two cohorts of Girls Who Code.

I share a little about my work experience, teach the girls about the design process which they will apply to their project, and lead them through an ideation session. In the ideation session they identify problems that they see in their everyday life and work together to narrow down to the problem they want to solve as a team during the program.

Through Chatham with the support of the CTO I worked with a colleague to create and organize a volunteer opportunity for our 100+ person tech team.

We partnered with Together We Rise to order non gender imposing bikes and helmets and worked with Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) to deliver 63 hand-built by the tech team bicycles and homemade cards to local children in foster care.
